Go Ahead And Share The Gospel…It Really Works!Posted: March 13, 2013
Why is it that sharing the Gospel with others is one of the greatest joys to experience but not often done?
You would think that if someone enjoyed doing something that resulted in great joy, then they would find a way to do it over and over again. When I was in the world not following Jesus, one thing I enjoyed doing was getting drunk. I thought it was so much fun. I enjoyed getting buzzed so much that I began to practice drinking as a habit for the buzz. Now I have been delivered from the bondage of drunkenness and brought into the leadership of righteousness; that practice is no longer a fun and joyful time to me.
There are different joys that I have in following Jesus and one of them is telling others about Him. Every time I open my mouth to speak of Him to someone, I know He is speaking right through me…I can feel Him! Even if the person listening to me isn’t feelin’ what I’m saying in the moment, sharing the good news of the Gospel can be thrilling. So why don’t I practice sharing the Gospel with others as often as I did when I was in the world seeking my own pleasures in drinking? Am I ashamed to identify with Jesus? Am I terrified of what people may think of me (fear of man)? I think it is a mixture of these sins. I also think there is another reason…unbelief.
When I say unbelief, I am not talking about believing that Jesus and the Gospel aren’t true. I believe with all my heart that they are true! My unbelief deep down is the concern, “They won’t believe it right now.” I have bought into the idea that in our American culture, when you put something “in” you should get the results immediately. Like when I use the microwave to heat up food instead of an oven or crockpot. Who wants to wait for their food! I have the same mentality when it comes to telling others about the Gospel of God. I want results right now. If I share the gospel with someone, they should believe it right away and become followers of Jesus in a few minutes! It’s as if I want to do the reaping in soul saving, not the watering or the planting. I have shared the Gospel with many people in my lifetime and not many have come to Christ in those “right away” moments. But I have seen several of those (with whom I’ve had the privilege to share) go on to follow Jesus, years later, through someone else. Whenever I see or hear that they are following Christ, I get excited to know that the Lord used me to be a part of bringing someone from death to life.
So why can’t I rely on the Lord to bring people to Himself? Is God faithful to do what He said He would do? Is He not using me to accomplish His work when I communicate the gospel to someone? Is not the Gospel the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes? The answer to all of these questions is a resounding YES!
So is it safe for me to say…let the proclamation begin again and again and again!
In the famous words of Ray Charles responding to someone assuring that he would bring the funk with his music, “Don’t you worry about me performing, I’m gonna make it do what it do.”
Don’t worry about God working on His end. Let us share the Gospel and let the Good News, Holy Spirit, and His word “do what it’s gonna do” in people’s lives…but in His timing, He will bring the result He wants.
